UPROSA @TheBritishScienceFestival

We had the pleasure of spending the last few days at the British Science Festival, the UK’s biggest science event. This year the BSF was hosted at the University of Bradford where everyday was filled with inspiring talks addressing all the latest scientific creations and discussions. The best thing about the Festival is that it is styled like a scientific conference but with two big differences: there is no £500 fee to attend (every talk is free!), plus the talks are tailored to a public audience without omitting any of the cutting edge scientific details, perfect!

This year some of the interesting talks included 'Drone Revolution', 'Listening for Alien Tweets' and 'Why has small become so big?', where the audience was introduced to the tiny world of nanotechnology and how it's having a big impact in a wide range of fields (for an example check out the work of nano-scientist Jan Engels here: http://uprosa.com/collections/nano-flowers-blue )
UPROSA was lucky to be involved with a stall featuring some of our most exciting designs on products such as tote bags, phone and Macbook cases. Over 4 days we really enjoyed to meet science enthusiasts from all over the world that were passionate about our concept and many of them rewarded us by becoming customers.

It was also pretty awesome to see images of some the UPROSA scientists featured on the cover of this year's festival programme - a BIG thank you to the British Science Association and congratulations to the scientists whose images were featured: Jan Engels, PhD. @ Hong Kong University of Science & Technology) (blue nano particles) and Martyna Popis, PhD. @Cambridge University (pink skin stem cells).

YOUNG SCIENTISTS

Although, the event was more targeted towards research professionals, we were extremely happy to meet a group of potential future scientists from one of the local primary schools. However, we are still not quite sure if they were more in for the free Popcorn or if they just loved our bold and colourful designs :)

SCIENCE ART

We were particularly happy to see so much cool science art at the festival! The highlight for us was the festival’s scientific imagery exhibition presenting Patterns of Mutation, the artwork of Immy Smith. Immy Smith is an artist in residence at Portsmouth University’s Brain Tumor Research Centre, where she uses visual art to investigate, illustrate and connect stories; both the scientific stories of brain tumors and the human narratives of patients, family members, and carers affected by brain tumors.

Another fascinating example of how science can be translated into art was the Mind’s Eye project. Mind’s Eye took festival visitors on a tour through the solar system using the voices of scientists and engineers who’s day job takes them to Mars, Pluto, the Moon and Saturn to showcase their exciting work. Mind’s eye had set up radio transmitters in various locations around the festival that represented the solar system. Participants were given iPods to tune into the radio at each hotspot and listen to the scientist’s insider stories.

All in all, we had a great event and we hope to be involved again next year. A BIG thank you to all who expressed their interest in us and our products! Of course we would also like to thank all of our customers – we really hope that you are enjoying your products!
